Already earning $25 million before its opening, the eighth and final Harry Potter movie looks to be a success, and critics say it should satisfy fans.

According to Kenneth Turan of The Los Angeles Times, the final Harry Potter movie offers a "thrilling and satisfying finish." Not a surprising comment considering the longevity of the movie franchise. The first movie, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone came out in 2001. Everything about the Harry Potter series is successful which is probably why the original cast members stuck around for over ten years and grew up in real life while simultaneously growing up as their Harry Potter characters on the big screen.

Daniel Radcliffe, who plays Harry Potter, wasn't even a teenager when he first played Harry in the original film. He's now in his twenties acting the part of Harry for the final time. The same goes for Emma Watson, who plays the lovable bookworm Hermione Granger in the movies. Ron Weasley, their friend in the movies played by Rupert Grint, has also grown up right in front of audience members' eyes on the big screen.

So what makes The Los Angeles Times say that the final Potter movie is "one of the best of the series?" The final Potter chapter is crammed full of magic, adventure and emotion, along with the intrigue of a captivating story. In The Deathly Hallows: Part 2, the evil wizard Voldemort is trying to get a hold of three items that allow the person who possesses them to control death. The Cloak of Invisibility, the Resurrection Stone, and the Elder Wand are the Deathly Hallows.

Racing against time, Harry and his friends are trying to stop Voldemort who has stored pieces of his soul in objects called Horcrux. Harry must find the Horcrux and destroy them in order to put an end to Voldemort's evil plan. As fans of Harry Potter have come to expect, there should be plenty of dark magic and adventure along the way.

There is a Lot of Money in Magic

However, magic isn't responsilble for the long-term success of Harry Potter as a book and as a movie. According to the-numbers.com, no Harry Potter movie has earned less than $795 million worldwide and the highest grossing film to date is the original movie. Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone raked in nearly $975 million worldwide.

A Lot Can Happen in 10 Years

As interesting and fun as magic, spells, and fantastical adventures are, it is also interesting to think about all that has happened in the world since the first Harry Potter was released to the world in 2001. Here is a brief summary of some events that have shaped the earth while Harry Potter was becoming a household name.

  • 5 Olympics have taken place since Harry Potter hit the big screen
  • the New England Patriots and Pittsburgh Steelers have combined to win 5 Super Bowls
  • the war in Iraq broke out in 2003
  • NASA landed a rover on Mars in 2004
